Student Safety Technician

Since October 2018, I have been working as the Student Safety Technician for the Industrial and Manufacturing Engineering Department at Cal Poly.

Job tasks have included: maintenance of safety equipment, chemical inventory, SDS and safety audits, planning and implementation of lab improvements, and the development of safe working procedure placards and videos.

Due to recent events, in-person labs for the fall of 2020 needed to be highly modified to maintain distance and clarity in procedure. I worked with a professor to develop a process flow through the lab that made sense and did not cross its own path. I suggested numbered signs at the stations with minimal descriptions to remind the students where to go next once they completed a task. I also made multiple layout changes to ensure that the students would not be crossing their own path through the lab. When the process was laid out and signs were up, I filmed and edited a video that walks them through the process and shows the space in the proper layout for the lab. This video will also be playing on a loop when they first walk into the classroom to remind them as they come in.
